A-Z Handbook for GEIS

Bicycles at School

Glen Eden Intermediate School provides a bike shed area for your child’s bicycle which is locked from 8.45 am – 2.55 pm each day. We also encourage your child to lock their bicycle inside the shed. If your child needs their bicycle during the day, they are able to gain access to the bike shed by going to the office and collecting the key. We have a few points that your child needs to consider while cycling to and from school as part of the agreement –

  • remember that they are representing Glen Eden Intermediate School when riding to and from school
  • to abide by the road safety rules at all times
  • always wear a helmet when riding their bicycle
  • don’t ride their bikes within the school grounds during the hours of 8.30 am – 3.30 pm
We have introduced a Glen Eden Intermediate School Bicycle Agreement, which must be signed before a child can cycle to and from school. When the student, parent/caregiver and the school sign the agreement, your child will receive a laminated Bicycle Agreement with his/her name on it. If you have any queries or concerns relating to your child cycling to school, please feel free to contact Michael Maher, Deputy Principal.

Health and Safety

A qualified nurse runs our Medical Centre. Students, who feel unwell at school, must report to the Medical Centre. It is essential the school be made aware of any health problems a student may have, and that contact telephone numbers are correct. Please advise the office of any change. All medication must be clearly labelled, and for certain medication, the parent or caregiver must fill in a form giving permission for administration.

Homework

The school expectation is that students from GEIS will complete

30-45 minutes homework Monday to Thursday. This homework may include a variety of things such as: Reading, learning spelling words and times tables, researching an inquiry topic, completing class work not finished, producing assignments.....  Each syndicate has their own homework programme. For clarification of your child’s homework requirements, please contact their teacher.

Kapa Haka Group

Te roopu o Waikumete consist of a determined group of students that represent the school in Kapa Haka. We are often called upon to do powhiri to welcome various groups into GEIS and travel extensively to participate in a number of opportunities outside of school. We are delighted to represent the school with pride and honour. In the past we have been open to perform at variety shows, productions, openings of new facilities and performance shows. Our tamariki look forward to learning about Maoritanga and sharing their experiences with others. Kia ora.

Lost Property

As with many schools, the amount of Lost Property generated is quite large. Please ensure your child’s uniform is fully and clearly named, making identification easy. Lost Property is generally displayed once per term and classes view the items to claim anything that is theirs. If your child claims that they have misplaced any piece of uniform, your first port of call should be the Lost Property cupboard, located outside the Hall.

Pacific Island Group

This group includes approximately 120 of our students from a variety of cultures. They learn a number of performance items during the school year and perform these at several events including GEIS Cultural Day (Term 3) and the West Auckland Polyfest, which is usually held in Term 4.

Parent Involvement and Support Group

We encourage parent and community support and involvement in our school. There are a number of social activities organised, which embrace the diverse cultures of our school. We have regular Hui discussions with our Maoris families, and our Pacifika group meets on focus nights. Our dedicated Parent Support Group meets monthly. This group is an important sounding board for new ideas and is one of the means by which parental opinion is obtained. This group takes an important role in fundraising. We also support the Parenting With Confidence and Netsafe programmes.

Photos

During the school year, a large nuber of photos of students, events and programmes will be recorded. These will be displayed around the school and the best will be showcased on this website. Class photos are taken in the first term and all other groups and sports team photos are taken in the third term.

Physical Education

Students take part in a variety of compulsory physical activities. Each syndicate will have their own time for syndicate sport competitions and PE sessions each week. As well as these, there is whole school fitness on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Full PE gear is COMPULSORY for all sessions.
